FAQ
We understand that commissioning memorial jewellery can feel unfamiliar or emotional. The answers below are here to help guide you through the process gently and clearly.

What is memorial and Heirloom jewellery?
Memorial or Heirloom jewellery is jewellery created to hold a small amount of a personal element — such as ashes, hair, fur, or other meaningful inclusions — allowing you to carry love, memory, and connection in a wearable form.
These pieces often become deeply personal heirlooms, offering comfort through the quiet presence of what they hold.
What personal elements can be included?
Heartstones jewellery can hold a variety of personal elements, including:
• Cremation ashes
• Hair or fur
• Fabric fibres
• Soil or sand
• Dried flowers or foliage
• Breastmilk
• Other small sentimental inclusions
If you are unsure whether a personal element is suitable, you are always welcome to ask before commissioning.
How much of the personal element is needed?
Only a very small amount is required — typically less than a teaspoon.
Exact guidance will be provided depending on the type of personal element and the design you choose. Any unused personal elements are carefully returned with your completed jewellery.
What happens to any unused personal elements?
Any unused ashes, hair, or other personal elements are returned to you securely alongside your finished piece.
Are personal elements treated respectfully?
Yes.
Every commission is handled individually, with care and intention. Personal elements are never mixed, shared, or processed alongside another client’s elements.
Can more than one person or pet be included in a single piece?
In many designs, multiple personal elements can be incorporated within a single Heartstone. This is discussed individually to ensure the design remains balanced and durable.
In some cases, personal elements may need to be combined within the Heartstone itself. If this is required, only the amount necessary for the piece will be used. Any unused personal elements returned to you will remain separate.
Is the jewellery durable enough for everyday wear?
Heartstones jewellery is created using jewellery-grade processes and precious metals chosen for strength, stability, and longevity.
While each piece is designed to be worn and lived in, we recommend following the care guidance provided to help preserve your jewellery over time.
Are Heartstones pieces hallmarked?
Yes.
All eligible Heartstones jewellery is hallmarked in accordance with UK regulations. Hallmarking provides verified assurance of precious metal content, authenticity, and traceability.
How long does the process take?
Each Heartstone is created individually.
Lead times vary depending on the design and the current commission schedule. Expected timeframes will always be communicated clearly before you proceed.
Will my jewellery look exactly like the photos shown?
Each Heartstone is unique.
Reference images provide guidance on style and tone, but natural variation is expected — particularly when personal elements are involved. These subtle differences are part of what make each piece individual.
Can I request a custom design?
Yes.
Heartstones specialises in bespoke work. Custom designs are discussed collaboratively to ensure the finished piece reflects what matters most to you.
How do I know my ring size?
For ring commissions within the UK, a complimentary ring sizer can be included in your postal kit to help ensure accurate measurements.
For international clients, we recommend having your finger professionally measured or using a ring sizer before commissioning a ring. Guidance can always be provided if needed.
Can memorial jewellery be resized or repaired in the future?
Where possible, resizing and repairs can be undertaken.
This depends on the design and the structure of the Heartstone. If your jewellery ever requires attention, you are always welcome to get in touch.
Do you offer payment plans?
If payment options are available for your commission, these will be clearly outlined during the enquiry or ordering process.
Is memorial jewellery suitable as a gift?
Yes.
Memorial jewellery is often commissioned as a deeply meaningful gift. If you are ordering on someone’s behalf, timing and presentation can be discussed to ensure the experience feels thoughtful and supportive.
How do I send my personal elements to you?
Clear instructions will be provided once your commission is confirmed.
For UK clients, a postal kit is provided which includes secure packaging, a pre-paid return envelope, and a ring sizer where required.
For international clients, guidance will be provided on safe and appropriate shipping methods.
Do you ship internationally?
International shipping may be available depending on location and postal regulations.
Availability and any additional considerations will always be discussed during the enquiry process.
What if I change my mind?
Because each piece is created specifically for you and may involve personal elements, commissions generally cannot be cancelled once work has begun.
Full terms are always provided in advance so you can feel comfortable before proceeding.
Can I contact you before ordering?
Of course.
If you have questions, concerns, or would simply like reassurance before commissioning, you are always welcome to get in touch. There is never any obligation to proceed.
